Georgia Lung Associates Receives National Accreditation
Georgia Lung Associates’ Computed Tomography (CT) program was recently awarded national accreditation by the American College of Radiology (ACR).
Georgia Lung is now one of only 19 accredited CT imaging centers in the state of Georgia, and the first in Cobb County.
Tony Broyles, CEO of Georgia Lung, is proud of the program’s recent accreditation and excited about what it means for its patients.
“Having our program recognized nationally is one more step in our continued effort to provide the Atlanta area with the highest quality pulmonary care.” Broyles said.
Georgia Lung’s CT program offers convenient, streamlined treatment for its patients, with better diagnostic services available on site.
Any CT program accredited by ACR must voluntarily undergo a rigorous review process to meet nationally recognized standards.
CT images, often called CAT scans, are cross-section images of body tissues and organs obtained by special x-ray equipment. When interpreted, these images allow for radiologists to more easily diagnose problems such as cancers, cardiovascular disease, infectious disease, trauma, and musculoskeletal disorders.

On March 22, Georgia Lung Associates physician Dr. Aris Iatridis was featured in a story in the Marietta Daily Journal (MDJ) about sleep apnea, a sleep disorder in which a person frequently stops breathing during their sleep. Dr. Iatridis serves as medical director of GA Lung’s Sleep Disorders Center.
In the article, by MDJ staff writer Erin Murrin, Dr. Iatridis commented on the frequency and seriousness of the disorder, citing that it predisposes people to far worse health problems than simple snoring, which is one of the primary symptoms of sleep apnea.
“People with sleep apnea are most prone to having heart attacks in their sleep,” Dr. Iatridis was quoted as saying. “They are also more prone to having heart attacks in general.”
Fortunately, though the disorder is quite common and serious, a simple treatment is available in the form of a CPAP machine. Georgia Lung CEO Tony Broyles described the treatment in the same article.
“CPAP stands for continuous positive airway pressure,” said Broyles. “It basically blows air and forces to help open airways that are closing down. It keeps that airway open so you are continuously breathing throughout the night.”

Dr. Melissa Bruce Rhodes and Physician Assistants Sue Bose and Ed Mahan recently attended the Third Annual Atlanta Lung Cancer Symposium at the InterContinental Buckhead Hotel. The symposium attracts physicians from around the country and is one of the premier professional healthcare seminars on lung cancer in the nation.
This year’s conference featured 30 nationally and internationally recognized speakers from four countries, including Canada, Spain, and Italy. The symposium focused on presentations of the latest treatments in lung cancer, including the National Lung Cancer Screening Trial, the use of PET scans to improve staging of lung cancer, and the progress being made on customized therapy for lung cancer.
“The conference was both interesting and informative,” said Dr. Rhodes. “I enjoyed the opportunity to interact with so many experts involved in the care of patients with lung cancer.”
Dr. Rhodes gave a presentation titled “Incorporation of New Technology in the Pre-Operative Evaluation of Resectable Lung Cancer Patients.”
The symposium is the only event of its kind in the Southeast and one of the few to unite so many experts of such a caliber, including lung experts from private and academic medicine.
